Last year, Chloe᷇ Laverson, a senior at the University of Utah, wrote a powerful Instagram post titled, “History of Racism in Sororities.” It has been liked almost 55,000 times and has hundreds of comments. Laverson described historically white fraternities and sororities (HWFS) as systematically engaging in exclusionary practices including recommendation letters, legacies, and minority tokenism, creating a Greek system that is consistently “racist, ableist, classist, antisemitic, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic.” In order for a Greek house to begin making the right decisions for change for their black sisters and other sisters of color, there needs to be powerful leadership.
